Floc Rhythm DIPA 8% Review- A Quest For Liquid Perfection

Nestled between a Howdens and a Fabric shop, on a sleepyindustrial estate In Canterbury, it’s easy to walk past the Floc brewery and taproom without knowing it’s there.

Wincheap, the home of Floc, is a suburb and thoroughfare of Canterbury, Kent, that lies just outside of the Cathedral city’s centre.

But look again and you will see a discreet entrance, bearingcolourful Floc artwork, that hints a marvellous space to make, and drink, beer hides behind the imposing silver shutters.

Launched in July 2020, Floc has delivered on its mission to make ‘hop-forward, delicious, flavourful beer’ that makes people smile.

Their ‘always vegan’ beers have won them respect among their peers and have led to many collaborations with top brewers like Deya and Gipsy Hill.

Floc’s vision was to create a brewery serving up delicious, unfiltered beer, collaborating with artists and building strong relationships with the creative community.

They have certainly done that and in the process made a great impression locally, and a name for themselves on the UK craft beer scene.

Floc is proud its beer is made using only the finest ingredientsand is unfiltered for the utmost flavour.

One such brew is Rhythm, their Small-batch 8% Double Indian Pale Ale (DIPA).

Brewed with Strata, Mosaic Cryo, and Simcoe hops the beer pours cloudy and is orange in colour.

Aroma-wise it has a strong grapefruit smell with a hint of orange. It does not smell as hoppy as an American DIPA but there is a faint whiff in the background.

When Floc created Rhythm they said they adapted their water profile, hopping regime and malt bill in their never-ending quest to make the perfect DIPA. This shows in the final product which is a balanced and Moreish strong ale.

Rhythm is sweet, it’s juicy and refreshing with a soft mouthfeel. More sweet than bitter. However, there is a pleasing gentle bitterness in the finish that gives way to a satisfying alcohol-warming.

A factor which adds to the overall experience of drinkingFloc’s beer is its fantastic artwork by their in-house artist Will Richards. His humorous, playful and striking designs make Floc’s cans stand out, in a market that is not short of inspired, eye-catching tinmanship, which is no mean feat.

In the summer Floc pull up the shutters and drag their long orange beer benches outside to accommodate the local tradesmen, beer geeks and the passer-by, who came out to buy a box of screws but is now enjoying a cold pint. It is a thing of beauty.

You can find Floc’s brewery and taproom here: Canterbury, Unit 7A Wincheap Industrial Estate, Cotton Road, Canterbury, CT1 3RB. Just a short walk from the train station.

Or you can buy their beer here.
